In the 'swing olympics', Chase "jumps' for the "gold"! photo by Colleen

I spent an hour & half walking around Woodland Lake on Friday, April 9, 2010. The last time I was there, the lake was frozen and I saw no birds (geese or ducks)! There are two American Coots in this photo. Joy-Vernon

The American Coots are difficult for me to get good photos of because they are always diving, scrambling across the water with their wings flapping etc... But they like cooked asparagus stalks & they come out of the water & right up to me to me, as this one did on Friday. Joy-Vernon

The Coots are not ducks! They have large lobed toes instead of webbed feet. Coots build floating nests that are anchored to vegetation. Note the red eyes! Joy-Vernon

This is my favorite photo I took last Friday. It shows the one Chinese Goose couple that seems to reside at Woodland Lake with their friend, a white duck! And a Yellow-Headed Blackbird on the left. Joy-Vernon

The Chinese Goose couple settled in on an island of reeds...you can see their "white duck" friend's head on the right of this photo. After about 45 minutes they all three left and swam around Woodland Lake together...just the three of them. Joy-Vernon

It was fascinating to me to see this threesome. Maybe the duck thinks the geese are its parents. The duck went everywhere the geese went, but sometimes the duck led them in their swimming around. The duck is in this photo, behind the goose on the left. Joy-Vernon
