When Eastie gave birth to a still born boy puppy at 4:30 AM, June 10th, she immediately substituted this stuffed squirrel as being her "baby". Her only "real" live "baby" wasn't born until 4 hours later. This photo was taken on June 19th. Eastie chooses her litter, we don't. She had a need to have more than one "baby". Joy-Vernon	June 19th...Eastie with her "real" baby & the litter mates she has chosen for the real "only" puppy. We have named the puppy, Darsie...a combination of daddy, Darbie's name and Eastie. Since Eastie had only one puppy, no way could we sell it or give it away, so Darsie will be a member of our family of 6! (four westies). Joy-Vernon	Darsie is going to be as wacky as her mother, growing up in such a strange litter... a stuffed bunny, a stuffed squirrel, a stuffed goose and an orange plastic dragon are the only litter mates she will ever know. (I have removed the plastic pork chop). Darsie, crawls over and sleeps with her litter mates. Here she is sleeping on her back with her siblings. Joy-Vernon

Joy-Vernon	The ducklings are precocial, which is a biological term referring to species in which the young are relatively mature and mobile from the moment of birth or hatching. They can swim and feed themselves on insects as soon as they hatch, although they stay near their mother for protection. Joy-Vernon	I was delighted to see a mother Mallard and her nine ducklings. Mallards form pairs only until the female lays eggs, at which time she is left by the male. The clutch is 8-13 eggs, which are incubated for 27-28 days to hatching with 50-60 days to fledgling.
