Globe boomed in the 1900's with the discovery of
silver. The silver was quickly depleted, but abudant copper kept the town
thriving.
Many of the mines still operate, but today Globe is known for the
many recreational opportunities available in the national forests that surround
the town. Hiking, Mountain Biking and Camping are all popular as are Boating
and Fishing on Roosevelt and Apache Lakes. There are also good seasonal
Whitewater Rafting opportunities on the Upper Salt River near town.
Globe's
historic downtown is also of interest to travelers.
Globe is located 80
miles east of Phoenix along US Highways 60 and 70. in the heart of Arizona's
magnificent Tonto National Forest and is surrounded by some of the most
spectacular mountain vistas in the Southwest. It has a colorful history,
punctuated by mining discoveries and is supposedly named for a globe-shaped
piece of pure silver found nearby. The mining and ranching economic base is
still a major factor in the city's economy.
Globe is situated near the
mid-point of the legendary Old West Highway that stretches from Apache
Junction, Arizona east to Lordsburg, New Mexico.
Globe is also the eastern
terminus of the Apache Trail, which runs northwest to Theodore Roosevelt
Recreation Area, then turns southwest to Apache Junction.
